Attachments?
Excellent book on attachments and trauma. I am not finished yet, but I have already found this book to be very helpful and provide key insights into understanding the children that I am counseling with currently.
Rating:
Abusive Fringe "Therapy"
Holding Therapy -- whether physically and/or psychologically enforced -- is considered child abuse today (see February 2006 issue of the journal *Child Maltreatment*). The authors have their own name for Holding Therapy. They call it "Holding Nurturing Process", but the Holding Therapy elements are there, such as stoking up a child ("up-regulate") while in the lap of the therapist, having the child demonstrate compliance by having him kick his legs for extended periods while being held, and getting the child to experience catharsis (called "Rage Reduction" by others). Numerous experts have also expressed concerns about sexually abused children being put in this close physical proximity with a strange therapist for a "corrective experience."
The authors also promote notions about child development and attachment that are in opposition to what we know through good research. And the idea that catharsis can be therapeutic was discredited decades ago. (Since ancient Greek times, it was thought that the expression of emotion would rid a person of that feeling, but research showed that expressing anger only made people BETTER at expressing anger.)

Ideas presented used immediately
With the info presented, I was able to immediately put into action some of the ideas. And they worked! I feel more confident parenting and isn't that the goal of the book?
