Rating:
Better than a regular DVD player
I guess overall the Mintek 5" Portable DVD Player is an average product that certainly could have been much worse. Before purchasing this DVD player, I had already owned two DVD-playing devices (that is, a PS2 and an Xbox). However, the PS2 DVD player requires one to enter a code right out of the box to play most movies and it lacks a zoom feature. As for the Xbox DVD player, it requires one to purchase a really expensive remote control before it can function at all. I'm not sure but I think it also lacks a zoom feature and requires one to enter a code. (We have yet to try it.)
The Mintek 5" Portable DVD Player allows you to play DVD movies and audio CDs. You can hook it up to a regular television set (or VCR) or you can take it with you on the road, as it has the advantage of being portable. Furthermore, it is much smaller than a regular DVD player, which is convenient, because it allows you to watch or listen to your material just about anywhere there's an outlet. It comes with a rechargable battery and a car adapter. The OSD function divides the screen in half where the top half shows the movie in a folded paper-like resemblance and the bottom half displays the settings, including chapter title #, time, angle, repeat, and subtitle information. It allows you to fast-forward up to 32 times regular speed; you can zoom in and out up to 4 times, and you can even move part of the screen while in zoom mode. There's also a slow motion function which allows you to slow down the action up to 8 times regular speed. Other noteworthy features include a 3D processing reverb mode (audio settings), in which you can program the DVD player's sound (movies or music) to sound like a concert, church, hall, cave, living room, arena, or bathroom.
If you're thinking of purchasing the Mintek 5" Portable DVD player, then there's a few things you ought to know. The DVD player has issues with loading time. It takes your average DVD around 13 seconds to load and play once you plop it inside and turn on the unit. On some occassions, the DVD will not load at all, even when it is inserted. The top left corner will read "Loading" and then 20 seconds later "No Disc". For the most part, the battery life is pathetic. It takes 13 hours to recharge it and it only lasts for 2 hours if you're using the screen, and 4 hours if you're not using it. Fortunately, upgrades are available that come with extended battery life times. If you pause your movie or CD, and/or leave it alone long enough, then the unit automatically shuts itself off. Simply pushing the "Return" button cuts it back on, but then it reloads the DVD/CD from the very beginning, sometimes succeeding, sometimes not. Whatever you do, do NOT lose the remote control! You'll be relying upon the remote a lot with this DVD player, as there's very few buttons on the unit itself. It is the only way to access the setup menu, fast-forward/rewind instead of just skip, put the movie or CD in slow motion, zoom in/out, repeat, explore time search, change subtitle (if necessary), language, or change play mode. The unit itself only contains "stop", "pause", "play", and "skip" functions. It also allows you to got to the movie's menu and change the size of the monitor, and that's just about it.

Do NOT waste your money!
This DVD player is a piece of JUNK!!! Broke after about 5-6 months and my friend's broke even sooner (we bought at the same time in the same store) We were "lured" by the price - $170, but you get what you pay for, right? And no, the kids weren't playing with it in the car. The customer service is.... well there IS NO customer service. The worst company I have ever dealt with. We purchased more expensive unit, by a different manufacturer of course, and it's working great (with the same kids in the car, so I doubt THAT was the problem). I really wish I read the reviews before wasting my money on this ...#$^&^%$#...
