During my second pregnancy I read this book, I followed the simple guidelines, after my baby was born, that were inside this book and ended up weighing less than I did in high school after about 6 months postpartum. You must follow the guidelines the very second the baby is born, but it is all doable. I breastfed and I am a stay at home mom, two things that Dr. Levine says actually slow weight loss, but in spite of that I found myself weighing 20 pounds less than I did before I got pregnant. I wish I could Thank Dr. Levine personally. I am rereading this book now with my 4th pregnancy and feel confident that I will be able to follow the tips Dr. Levine shared. It is not a waste of money, you just need to have read it before you have the baby and keep it close as a reference after your baby is born, and don't give up!!!!

Read Debra Waterhouse's Book Instead!
I was stunned by the negative tone and lack of support for nursing moms in this book. I read this book (last year) at 5 months post-partum (from the library- thank goodness I did not spend money on it!) and it left me feeling despondent. This book weighed heavy on my mind and made me feel guilty for going over the "recommended weight gain"- reading it was not a good experience.
I am a very fit person- before, during, and after my pregnancy. I run competitively, do pilates and yoga, and do advanced step aerobics classes. My weight did not fall off easily- it's slow and steady- and it's hard work.
I would advise to pass on this book and pick up Debra Waterhouse's book: Fighting the Female Fat Cell After Pregnancy. Dr. Levine didn't tell a plan that worked for my body or for the body of other mothers I know. Save yourself the heartache- and leave this book on the shelf.
My son is now 17 months and stopped nursing 4 months ago- I have about 8 pounds (of about 50 gained!) to go to reach my pre-pregnancy weight, and I have cut my mile time by a minute! I lost 2.5 pounds this week- at 17 months postpartum.
It can happen- you can do it- keep going- but this book will not help you.

the worst ever for a new mom
While I was reading this book I was amazed that it even made it onto a book shelf. The author said that **the body is a furnace after you give birth and you should have no problem losing the weight--you shouldn't even have to try.** He said that women should lose all of the weight in their first six months--with little or no exercise. This is such crap. From a new mom who is working her butt off to get back in shape (and eating healthy) this ticks me off. I barely lost any of the weight my first six months. My body is not a furnace (as I'm sure many aren't...no two bodies work the same). I also breastfed my daughter for the first 6 months...this did not help w/ weight loss either. My daughter is now almost 9 months old and I have only lost half of the weight...but that was by eating healthy and staying active. This book honestly made me feel bad about myself, because I wasn't able to acheive what the author thinks is "normal" weight loss following the birth of my child. And FYI ladies...just because you lose the weight, doesn't mean you gain the muscle back--just work-out and eat healthy...that's how you lose the baby weight:)
