An improvement on a great personal CD player

I owned a Sony DNF420 with almost identical features for almost a year. I was quite happy with it. I wound up giving it to a relative (it's surprising how few people under 25 own a dedicated CD player today) and buying this model.

I was surprised to find Sony improved an already great product. The buttons were easier to operate and more intuitive, the sound seemed better, and battery life (already astounding -- over 20 hours on a single AA) was better. On top of that the radio was improved -- reception was better on all bands.

Sony also included a remote control with this unit. I didn't realize how handy that would be, but I use it all the time. The Walkman can stay in your jacket pocket while the much lighter and smaller remote stays in your hand.

CD players may be fading away as mp3 players replace them, so this Sony CD Walkman might be regarded one of the peaks of personal CD player technology before personal CD players go the way of 8-tracks. A few more years and units like this may be hard to find.

Good for 14 months only for me. Is that good or bad for their price?

Sure enough..this is the second Sony Walkman I've had in a little over two years now. This 420 model sounds fine in all modes except weather( but that's location usually). the TV sound function I really like. However, like another Sony, different model, they all fail on me just out of the 12 months Factory Warranty period. This one, slipped off a very low Chaise, to the deck, only one time, and that ended playing any more CD's. The other radio/TV functions still work. I believe with Sony's so called G Shock, that should not have failed. OR, is G shock really just a skipping avoidance term when say, jogging whilst listening to a CD ? I'm not sure. Again a similiar previous model but different number failed on me also for CD's but I never dropped it. It had the so called G shock also.

Buying the Store offered insurance price for these vs, the gamble after 14 months or so.......well, luck of the draw I guess. Concluding: I think Sony really needs to revist thier design specs on the CD drive portion of these units. Thus the 3 Star Rating from me. Maybe I'll try one more..the DNF430 Hmmmm. Last try!
